Kruip in de huid van… Frank Zappa (english below)
Eind jaren 60 ontvingen wij wekelijks een deeltje van de standaard encyclopedie. In 1970 hadden we de 13 kloeke delen compleet. Bij het lemma popmuziek stonden slechts vier namen: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan en Frank Zappa. Het duurde tot 1979 voor ik Zappa “ontdekte”. Er stond een lovende recensie van het album Sheikyerbouti in Muziek Express en ik trok de stoute schoenen aan. Thuisgekomen wist ik niet wat ik meemaakte. Zoiets had ik nog nooit gehoord. Met rode oortjes las ik de teksten en met verhoogde hartslag luisterde ik naar de muziek. In de jaren die volgden kocht ik alles wat Zappa al had uitgebracht (en dat was veel) en wat nog zou volgen. Er is vanaf 1979 vrijwel geen dag voorbij gegaan dat ik niet naar Frank Zappa geluisterd heb.
Begin jaren 80 belde ik live met het programma de Avondspits van Frits Spits voor het onderdeel “kruip in de huid van…”. Ik stelde mij voor als “Frank Zappa”. Frits Spits geloofde niet zo maar dat ik Zappa was. Ik moest vijf vragen beantwoorden om te bewijzen dat ik hem echt was. Daar komen ze.

Zappa produceerde albums van Alice Cooper en speelde op een nummer mee. Welke is dat? Nou daar zat ik in mijn jongenskamer met alle LP’s van Zappa om mij heen, de pop-encyclopedie en een aantal biografieën van Zappa onder handbereik. Wist ik veel? Ik viel door de mand… Ik weet het nog steeds niet en verwacht dus ook niet dat jullie het weten. Als alternatief een weggevertje: de titel van het enige hitje dat Zappa in Nederland had (wel constant in de top 2000). Let op de spelling! D.

De laatste vraag wist ik dan weer wel: de naam van de (latere) opnamefaciliteit van Zappa voluit. Nee niet iets met studio. Dat is E (zonder lidwoord).
Maar goed we zijn er nog niet. Een laatste vraag: de naam van de door Klockhuys gevonden meest noordelijke cache. Huh, wat een rare vraag ineens?! Dat is F
Deze cache is opgedragen aan Hans Nijhof. Hans had een café in de Jordaan. Tegen sluitingstijd draaide hij altijd dezelfde paar nummers. Eén daarvan was “What’s the ugliest part of your body?”. Ik ontmoette Hans jaren later toen hij wethouder was van de gemeente Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Tijdens een vergadering (ik kende hem nog maar net) kwamen we erachter dat we beide Zappa-fans waren. In gezelschap van stomverbaasde ambtenaren zongen we samen “What’s the ugliest part of your body?”. In 2018 (hij was net weer gekozen voor een nieuwe periode als wethouder) werd bij hem slokdarmkanker ontdekt. Hij deed op twitter uitgebreid verslag van zijn leven met kanker en werd zelfs trending topic. In 2019 overleed hij. Dat hij moge rusten in vrede.

Take on the role of ... Frank Zappa
At the end of the 1960s, we received a weekly part of the standard encyclopedia. In 1970 we had the 13 solid volumes complete. There were only four names in the lemma pop music: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Frank Zappa. It took until 1979 before I "discovered" Zappa. There was a rave review of the Sheikyerbouti album in Music Express and I took the bold step, went to Amsterdam and bought the album. When I got home I didn't know what hit me. I had never heard anything like that. I read the lyrics blushing and listened to the music with a pounding heart. In the years that followed I bought everything that Zappa had already released (and that was a lot) and what would follow. Since I bought my first album in 1979 hardly a day has passed that I did not listen to Frank Zappa.
In the early 1980s, I was a contestant in the radio show of Frits Spits, called ‘de avondspits’ (the evening traffic jam) for the part "take on the role of ...", where people would pretend to be a celebrity and had to answer questions on less-known facts. I introduced myself as "Frank Zappa". I had to answer five questions to prove that I was really him. Here they are.
1. What is Frank Zappa's full first name? (you have to count the numeric value of the letters (A=1 etc.)) = A.
2. What is the full first name of Frank Zappa's eldest daughter? Idem = B
3. Oops, I have forgotten that question .... (I got it right). Alternatively, the following question (I'll explain why later): What’s the ugliest part of your body? Answer (only the noun) = C.
4. Zappa produced albums of Alice Cooper and played guitar on one of his songs. Which one is that? Well there I was in my boy's room with all the Zappa LPs around me, the pop encyclopedia and a number of biographies of Zappa within reach. I had no clue! I messed up big time ... Until today, I still don't know the answer and therefore don't expect you to know. So here’s a giveaway: the title of the only hit that Zappa had in the Netherlands (constantly in the top 2000). Notice the spelling! = D.
5. I knew the last question: the name of the Zappa recording facility in full (no name with studio in it). That is E (without article).
Anyway we are not there yet. A final question: the name of the northernmost cache found by Klockhuys. Huh, what a strange question all of a sudden ?! That is F.
This cache is dedicated to Hans Nijhof. Hans had a cafe in the Jordaan. By closing time he always played the same pair of songs. One of them was "What’s the ugliest part of your body?" I met Hans years later when he was an alderman of the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug. During a meeting (I only just met him) we found out that we were both Zappa fans. In front of a bunch of stunned officials, we sang together "What’s the ugliest part of your body?" In 2018 (he had just been elected for a new period as alderman) he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He wrote extensively about his life with cancer on twitter and even became a trending topic. He died in 2019. May he rest in peace.
