Geocache Description:

This is a little Chapel in the lovely village of Eastcote.

I am still trying to find out the history of the Chapel... and will add more information...when I can find out.

information in the book: Pattishall, a Parish Patchwork by Richard Moss and Iris Illingworth. On October 17th 1838, Eastcote Chapel was opened. The preachers were Mr Wheeler of Moulton, Mr Prust and Mr Gray of Northampton. The early Church Books gives information about membership. In November 1838 there were Eliz Robinson, Joseph Kirton (Baptised), Sarah Heel, Willian Heel (latterly dismissed from Towcester Baptist Chapel), John Key, Ann Key, Ann Billing and Samuel Brown (dismissed from Bugbrooke Baptist). These family names long linked to non-conformity in Bugbrooke, Kislingbury, Milton and Northampton. It reveals a wider horizon than that of the members of the established church who could look little beyond the boundaries of the parish. In January 1839 a Sabbath School was commenced; there were 30 children with 3 teachers: John Key, Ann Chamberlain and Sarah Dickens. Memebership contimued to thrive and on May 5th of the same year 9 were baptised into the church: Thomas and Ann Bucher, David Billing, Elizabeth and Thomas Webster, Mary Ayres, William Thunstone, John and Barbara Rogers. The Church Books record Thomas Chamberlain's appointment on June 5th 1839. The Rev Thomas Chamberlain died on 23rd April 1869 aged 70. he was buried at the Baptist Chapel Eastcote. He had been a prominent figure in county Baptist circles. He had lived for 32 years in Pattishall and Eastcote. Through his efforts, two Baptist Chapels had been established. His obituary in the Northampton Mercury (1.5.1869) testified to the regard and affection in which he was held in the villages.

Thank you Chucklebus for sending the information. Also Thank you Jerrycatcat for adding your personal family History too. There has been a chapel in Eastcote since 1838, over 180 years. The last meeting will be on the 8th December 2019 at 3pm and will be a Carol service with refreshments afterwards. On the 15th December will be open from 1pm to 4pm if anyone wishes to have a last look around. The chapel will then be closed.

Please bring a pen to sign the log.

Happy Hunting 😊
