GG PW to skrócone określenie na Gmach Główny Politechniki Warszawskiej. Jego centrum i najbardziej reprezentacyjnym miejscem jest Duża Aula i to właśnie to miejsce chciałam Ci pokazać. Za każdym razem, gdy przechodziłam Aulą, jej witraż niezmiennie mnie zachwycał – mam nadzieję, że zachwyci również Ciebie.

GG PW is an acronym for the Main Building of the Warsaw University of Technology. Its center and the most representative place is the Big Hall (Duża Aula) and this is the place I wanted to show you. Every time I walked throught the Aula, the stained-glass window on the ceiling invariably amazed me. I hope it will also amaze you.

Nieco historii tego miejsca:

Budynek powstał na przełomie XIX i XX wieku dla rosyjskojęzycznego Instytutu Politechnicznego. Autorem projektu jest Stefan Szyller, który zaprojektował również bramę Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, gmach Zachęty, wystrój mostu Poniatowskiego oraz wiele innych obiektów głównie na Mazowszu, ale też w innych częściach obecnej Polski (i nie tylko).

Gmach Główny w swojej architekturze odwołuje się do renesansu i baroku. Zachowane są zasady osiowości i symetrii, a także podziału fasady na trzy części. Kolumny nawiązują do antycznych stylów, oczywiście w odpowiedniej kolejności: od najcięższego – toskańskiego – na dole do najlżejszego i najbardziej finezyjnego – korynckiego – na górze. Nie tylko kolumny są zdobione. Pomiędzy nimi znalazło się miejsce na alegoryczne płaskorzeźby, a fasadę wieńczy grupa rzeźbiarska przedstawiająca Geniusza Wiedzy, siedzące Fizykę i (obecnie) Architekturę oraz chłopca między nimi.

Gdyby jednak nie wiedzieć, do czego służy budynek, a także nie przyglądać się bliżej zdobieniom, nie byłoby łatwo stwierdzić, że jest to siedziba wyższej uczelni technicznej. Na myśl przyszedłby raczej jakiś pałac, może teatr? Ale dokładne zwrócenie uwagi na detale rozwiewa wątpliwości – ten budynek służy nauce i technice. Widzisz dwie tablice z latami rozpoczęcia i zakończenia budowy? Pod nimi znajduje się rzeźbiona dekoracja z motywem roślinnym, w który jednak wplecione są koło zębate, młotek, ekierka i inne techniczne atrybuty. Płaskorzeźby nad trzema oknami przedniej ściany również są wielce wymowne.

A bit of history of this place:

The building was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries for the Russian-language Polytechnic Institute. The author of the project is Stefan Szyller, who also designed the gate of the University of Warsaw, the building of Zachęta, the decoration of the Poniatowski Bridge and many other objects mainly in Mazovia, but also in other parts of present-day Poland (and not only).

The Main Building in its architecture refers to the Renaissance and Baroque. The principles of axiality and symmetry are preserved, as well as the division of the façade into three parts. The columns refer to ancient styles, of course in the right order: from the heaviest – Tuscan – at the bottom to the lightest and most subtle – Corinthian – at the top. Not only the columns are decorated. Between them there is a place for allegorical reliefs, and the façade is crowned by a sculptural group depicting Genius of Knowledge, sitting Physics and (now) Architecture and a boy between them.

However, if we did not know what the building is used for, and if we did not take a closer look at the ornaments, it would not be easy to say that it is the seat of a technical university. One would rather think of a palace, maybe a theatre? But paying attention to details dispels doubts – this building serves science and technology. Do you see two boards with the years of commencement and completion of construction? Underneath there is a carved decoration with a floral motif, which, however, is interwoven with a gear wheel, a hammer, a set square and other attributes of technology. The reliefs above the three windows of the front wall are also meaningful.

W środku

Po wejściu do środka znajdujesz się w olbrzymim, reprezentacyjnym holu. Nad Tobą mieści się tzw. Mała Aula, ale ja chciałabym Ci pokazać Aulę Dużą, najbardziej reprezentacyjne miejsce Politechniki, dlatego przejdź przez hol aż do klatki schodowej. Po zejściu z ostatniego schodka, przejdź jeszcze kilka(naście) kroków, odwróć się za siebie, spójrz do góry. To właśnie chciałam Ci pokazać.

Imponujący plafon został zrekonstruowany po wojennych zniszczeniach dopiero w latach 90 ubiegłego wieku. Jego wygląd nawiązuje do oryginalnego projektu: odtworzono graficzny podział i kolorystykę przeszkleń. Klatka schodowa z kolei przypomina tę z zamku w Baranowie Sandomierskim, jest bardzo bogata w detale. Niektórym za chwilę będziesz mieć potrzebę przyjrzenia się bliżej ;)

Inside

When you get inside, you are in a huge, representative hall. Above you is the so-called Little Hall, but I would like to show you the Big Hall, the most representative place of the University of Technology, so go through the hall until you reach the staircase. After descending from the last step, walk a few more steps, turn back, look up. This is what I wanted to show you.

The impressive plafond was reconstructed after the war damage only in the 1990s. Its appearance refers to the original design: the graphic division and colours of the glazing have been recreated. The staircase, in turn, resembles the one in the castle in Baranów Sandomierski, and is very rich in details. You will need to take a closer look at some of them ;)
