About Cranwell Station
For forty years a railway ran 5.25 miles from Sleaford to Cranwell, affectionately known as the Cranwell Express.
The single line branch was originally built in 1916 to assist in the construction of the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS).The line ran to Sleaford, where it joined the Great Northern Railway.
RNAS Cranwell was intended for training pilots and aircrew during World War I. Control soon passed to the Royal Air Force in 1918, and the location became known as RAF Cranwell.
Following the transfer of the airfield to the newly formed RAF in 1918, the line was used primarily for freight whilst also operating a passenger service. However, the regular passenger trains were withdrawn in November 1926 due to competition from local bus companies. The freight service on the line continued until its final closure in 1956. The track was removed in October 1957.
The Station building is still in use today as the Guardhouse for RAF Cranwell.
Important Information:
- RAF Cranwell is an ACTIVE site. Therefore I would reccomend that this cache is NOT done during hours of darkness and within normal 9am-5pm business hours.
- Please try not to act suspicious around the site as this would attract unwanted attention.
- The lay-by adjacent to the green building should be within the 500 feet rule. (see below)
- Do not park in the lay-by at the front of the guardhouse - There is parking at the rear for a quick minute or two.

Any logs which do not follow the above conditions, will unfortunately be deleted without warning.
