V roce 1889 se konala v Paříži světová výstava. Její hlavní atrakcí se stala právě vybudovaná Eiffelova věž. Členové Klubu českých turistů, kteří výstavu navštívili, byli její krásou uchváceni a rozhodli, že její napodobeninu postaví v Praze. Pro realizaci stavby pětkrát menší věže byl vybrán vrch Petřín. Stavební práce byly zahájeny v březnu 1891 a již 20. srpna téhož roku byla rozhledna slavnostně otevřena.
Ocelová konstrukce váží 175 tun a měří 63,5 metru. Jádrem je osmiboký tubus, v němž je umístěn výtah, okolo něj se vinou dvě točitá schodiště s 299 schody. Ve výšce 20 a 55 metrů jsou umístěny vyhlídkové plošiny.
V letech 1953 až 1992 sloužila rozhledna pravidelnému televiznímu vysílání pro Prahu.

In 1889, a world exhibition was held in Paris. Its main attraction was the recently built Eiffel Tower. The members of the Czech Tourists Club who visited the exhibition were impressed by its beauty and decided to build its imitation in Prague. The Petřín Hill was chosen for the construction of a five times smaller tower. Construction work began in March 1891 and already on August 20th of the same year the lookout tower was inaugurated.
The steel structure weighs 175 tons and measures 63.5 meters. The core is an octagonal tube in which the elevator is located, around it are two spiral staircases with 299 steps. Observation platforms are located at 20 and 55 meters.
From 1953 to 1992, the observation tower served as a regular television broadcast for Prague.
