SWE - Stockholmssyndromet
Stockholmssyndromet, en term myntad av psykolog och kriminolog Nils Bejerot efter det berömda Norrmalmstorgsdramat som skedde i och omkring Kreditbanken mellan den 23-28 Augusti 1973 på Norrmalmstorg i Stockholm. Den ökände svenska bankrånaren Clark Olofsson höll, efter en misslyckat rånförsök, stora delar av bankpersonal gisslan under 5 dagar. Under tiden var det flera i gisslans som började fatta tycke för sin gisslantagare och som i slutändan till och med samarbetade för gisslantagarens syften. Detta psykologiska fenomen fick namnet Stockholmssyndromet och har sedan dess blivit den vedertagna begreppet i hela världen för dessa typer av extrema situationer.
Det finns fyra stycken beståndsdelar som karaktäriserar Stockholmssyndromet;
- Att gisslan utvecklar positiva känslor för sin gisslantagare.
- Att gisslan och gisslantagare inte har någon tidigare relation, de känner inte varandra.
- Att gisslan utvecklar en tveksamhet, till och med vägran, för att samarbeta med polisen eller annan myndighetspersonal.
- Att gisslan väljer att se sin gisslantagares mänskliga sidor, man identifierar sig, vilket också förmildrar hotbilden som hen utsätter gisslan för.
Det finns flera kända fall av Stockholmssyndromet genom historien. Det kanske mest kända gäller den amerikanska publicistdottern Patty Hearst som vid 17 års ålder kidnappades från sitt hem i Berkley för att senare hjälpa sina kidnappare med både bankrån och utpressning. I den mer nutida fiktionen nämns Belle i Disneys Skönheten & Odjuret som ett utmärkt exempel på Stockholmssyndromet.

ENG - The Stockholm syndrome
The Stockholm Syndrome, a term created by psychologist and criminologist Nils Bejerot after a hostage situation at the Kreditbanken bank in Stockholm in August 1973. The infamous Swedish bank robber Clark Olofsson took a group of bank employees hostage, for 5 days, after a failed robbery attempt. During the course of the hostage situation, parts of the hostages began to developed a bond with their captor to an extent they started supporting his cause. This psychological term got the name Stockholm syndrome and has, ever since, been a world-spread term describing this type of extreme situation.
There are four key components that characterize Stockholm syndrome:
- A hostage's development of positive feelings towards the captor.
- No previous relationship between hostage and captor.
- A refusal by hostages to cooperate with police forces and other government authorities.
- A hostage's belief in the humanity of the captor because they cease to perceive the captor as a threat when the victim holds the same values as the aggressor.
There are several famous examples of the Stockholm syndrome. The most famous case might be that of Patty Hearst who was abducted from here Berkeley home at the age of 17. Patty later joined the kidnappers' cause and assisted them both in robberies and blackmail. In recent fiction Belle, from Disney's Beauty and the Beast, is mentioned as a perfect example of Stockholm syndrome.
