Ma cosa è realmente questa struttura? È una gogna come molti pensano sugestionati dalla presenza di una pesante catena?
A quale periodo risale?
La struttura, datata attorno al XIII secolo, era utilizata dai podestà della città come tribuna per amministrare la giustizia e, in particolare, sorvegliare sulla correttezza delle transazioni del mercato. È per questo che sono presenti le misure standard dell'epoca: sul gradino più alto le sagome dei mattoni e tegole, sul pilastro sud-est le lunghezze e una catena con un anello per misurare le fascine di legna da ardere.
In caso di controversia il cliente e il commerciante si sarebbero rivolti all'autorità e seduta stante avrebbero ricevuto un verdetto se la misura era corretta o meno.

This structure, built around the XII century was used by the podestà (similar to the mayor) of the city to officiate justice. In particular to officiate justice for the market. This is why there are the standar measure; for example, on the top step, the outline of a standard brick; on the south east column the standard lenght and a chain with a circle for wood bunches. If a customer had to file a grievance with a seller they would go to the podestà and have the goods inspected, if the measure was not as standard the seller would receive a sanction.
