Geocache Description:

When I was looking at placing a cache at the old trolleybus depot in Ipswich, it occurred to me that the railway ran right next to the trolleybus depot.  Had there been a station there as well to create an integrated transport system?

There hadn't.  But I did discover that there used to be a station here.  On the face of it, the outskirts of Nacton village seems like an odd spot for a railway station, until you realise that the George Tomline, the Chairman of the Felixstowe Railway and Pier company, who built the Ipswich-Felixstowe branch line, lived at the nearby Orwell Park.  Tomline Road, near Derby Road station is also named after George Tomline.

The station was opened in 1877 and, although the branch line remains in operation, Orwell station was closed in 1959.  The station building has been converted to a private dwelling and is not really visible from the main road.
