Geocache Description:

This is a virtual cache located in Arches National Park (Southeastern Utah). The hiking trail is over five (5) miles round trip, if you take the straight approach with no side trails to other popular spots. It offers a spectacular array of natural bridges, spires, and fins. Elevation is approximately 5465 feet.

Such utter and overpowering beauty as nearly kills a sensitive person by its piercing glory. - Everett Ruess

To receive credit for this cache you need to:

  1. Visit the cache site on or after 8/23/02, the date this virtual cache was established.
  2. Hike, hike, hike, enjoy the views, do not trample cryptobiotic soil crusts, and locate the cache site.
  3. Provide proof of your find (pick one):
    • Take a picture of yourself and your GPSR, and upload the picture when you log your find. Make sure you include the background and the ground you are standing on (just as I have). Please do not include the alternative in your picture.
    • Alternative: Send me an e-mail telling me what the sign says, located 225 feet southeast of Little Angel. Please do NOT post your answer when you log the cache (even if encrypted), nor post a picture of the sign.
  4. In logging your find, compose a good size paragraph describing your journey.

If you have enough water, food, and energy then hike the Primitive Trail on your way back. This will add a couple of miles to your hike. The Primitive Trail will take you on a wild ride through the fins. As with most virtual caches, it is not the destination that is important, it is the journey. Have a safe and memorable journey.

NOTE
WATCH YOUR STEP! Cryptobiotic soil crust is a living groundcover that forms the foundation of high desert plant life in Arches and the surrounding area. This knobby, black crust is dominated by cyanobacteria, but also lichens, mosses, green algae, microfungi, and bacteria. - NPS.

HISTORY
Time is a sort of river of passing events ... no sooner is a thing brought into sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away. - Marcus Aurelius [A.D. 121-180]

BACKGROUND
My wife, MayMay, and I went on a road trip to Southeastern Utah at the end of August of 2002. During our visit to Arches National Park, we experienced overwhelming desert beauty on many occasions. Our hike through the Devils Garden not only provided a challenging hike, but also many sites and sounds. By the time we were done hiking and sightseeing in the Devils Garden, we racked up 8.5 miles on our hike (according to our GPSR). Since there were no other Geocaches in the area, I thought I would make a virtual cache inside the Devils Garden. Enjoy.
