The Merchant Navy Seafarers War Memorial
The Merchant Navy Seafarers War Memorial at Harwich, Essex is a 15 ft granite obelisk on an integral plinth with a two-stepped base. It stands on the quay at Harwich Harbour where it is visible to passing ships. On two faces of the shaft is the badge of the Merchant Navy, and there is also an inscription which reads:-
Their names are not inscribed above a bed of common clay,
but in the scrolls of rolling waves and wreaths of swirling spray.
Their epitaphs are written in the language of the sea
On all the oceans white caps flow, you do not see crosses row on row,
but those who sleep beneath the sea, rest in peace for your country is free.
Dedicated to the Merchant Navy by the Merchant Navy Association Harwich.
In August 2004 War Memorials Trust gave £250 towards the commissioning of the memorial. Although Harwich has a long history of merchant seafaring, there had until that time been no memorial dedicated to those of the Merchant Navy who had fallen in war. The harbour of Harwich was important during both World Wars for merchant and naval shipping. The operations in which it played a particular part were the East Coast convoys of World War II.
