Codex Seraphinianus Mystery Cache

Codex Seraphinianus (dá­le jen „Ko­dex“) je kni­ha ital­ské­ho vý­tvar­ní­ka a ná­vr­há­ře Lui­gi­ho Se­ra­fi­ni­ho. Ten ji na­psal v le­tech 1976-78 a po­prvé vy­šla v Itá­lii v ro­ce 1981. Má zhru­ba 360 stran ve dvou svaz­cích.

Kni­ha je bi­zar­ní en­cy­klo­pe­dií pa­ra­lel­ní­ho svě­ta, kte­rý se v mno­hém po­do­bá to­mu na­še­mu, ale ta­to po­dob­nost be­re za své čím víc od­ha­lu­je­me je­ho de­tai­ly. Te­dy ty de­tai­ly, kte­ré jsme schop­ni od­ha­lit: Text je to­tiž nap­sán v ele­gant­ním, ale ne­sro­zu­mi­tel­ným ru­ko­pi­sem a tak ob­sah je pří­stup­ný ví­ce­mé­ně jen pro­střed­nic­tvím ilus­tra­cí.

Ilus­tra­ce to­ho ale mno­ho ne­ob­jas­ňu­jí. I když čas­to zo­bra­zu­jí běž­né před­mě­ty, zví­řa­ta, ros­tli­ny, li­di, nik­dy to ne­ní jen tak: Tu má­me mi­lu­jí­cí se pár, kte­rý se trans­for­mu­je v kro­ko­dý­la, jin­de cir­ku­so­vé­ho ko­ně je­hož zad­ní část pře­chá­zí v ja­kou­si ob­lud­nou lar­vu, jin­de po­div­né by­tos­ti ob­lé­ka­jí kost­liv­ce do ků­ží aby tak vy­ro­bi­li no­vé li­di, sé­rie ob­ráz­ků ka­ta­lo­gi­zu­jí růz­né rost­lin­né formy, ne­chy­bí bi­zar­ní ar­chi­tek­tu­ra, přís­tro­je a to vše je ob­klo­pe­no de­tail­ní­mi po­pi­sy, sché­ma­ty a ná­čr­ty.

Moh­la by to klid­ně být pa­ro­die ne­bo pros­tě u­mě­lec­ká ex­hi­bi­ce. Ov­šem množ­ství de­tai­lů a ob­rov­ský roz­sah se vzpí­rá ta­ko­vé­mu vý­kla­du. Na­bí­zí se srov­ná­ní s Voy­nich­ov­ým ru­ko­pi­sem (ten ale ne­ní ani tak de­tail­ní a pro­pra­co­va­ný), s e­po­sem V ří­ši ne­sku­teč­na Hen­ry­ho Dar­gera (ten ale psal an­glic­ky) ne­bo s Bor­ge­so­vou po­víd­kou Tlön, Uq­bar, Or­bis Ter­tius (ta ta­ké ne­ní psá­na nez­ná­mým ja­zy­kem a pís­mem).

Ko­dex po svém vy­dá­ní byl vzác­nou a dos­ti dra­hou kni­hou, což mož­ná přis­pě­lo k au­ře ta­jem­ství, kte­rá jej ob­klo­pu­je a u­dě­la­la z něj kul­tov­ní zá­le­ži­tost. Naš­těs­tí pos­led­ní re­edi­ce už jsou mno­hem dos­tup­něj­ší a tak se ko­neč­ně s kni­hou mů­že sez­nám­it šir­ší ok­ruh zá­jem­ců.

Codex Seraphinianus (“Codex” in fur­ther text) is a book by Ital­ian artist and de­sign­er Lui­gi Serafini. It was writ­ten be­tween 1976 and 1978 and was first pub­lished in 1981 in Italy. It has about 360 pages in two vol­umes.

The book is a bizarre en­cy­clopae­dia of a par­al­lel uni­verse much akin to ours. But this fa­mil­iar­i­ty rapid­ly dis­in­te­grates when we ex­plore the de­tails. At least those de­tails we can ac­tu-al­ly un­der­stand: The text is writ­ten in el­e­gant but in­com­pre­hen­si­ble script and so the con­tent is chief­ly ac­ces­si­ble through its il­lus­tra­tions

The il­lus­tra­tions, how­ever, do not bring much clar­i­ty ei­ther. Even when they show every­day items, an­i­mals, plants, peo­ple, it is nev­er with­out a catch: Here we have a love­mak­ing couple that trans­forms into an al­li­ga­tor, over there is a cir­cus horse whose hind part blends into a mon­strous larva-like ap­pendage, some­where else strange hu­manoids are dress­ing up skele­tons in skins making new peo­ple that way. There are se­ries of pic­tures cat­e­go­riz­ing plant forms, or un­re­al ar­chi­tec­ture, con­trap­tions and all that is sur­round­ed in de­tailed de­scrip­tions, schemes and draw­ings.

It could easily be a parody or simply a case of an art ex­hi­bi­tion­ism. But the amount of de­tail and the sheer volume de­fies such ex­pla­na­tion. The book is some­times com­pared to the Voynich Manu­script (but that is not nearly as elab­o­rate and de­tailed), In the Realms of the Un­re­al by Hen­ry Darger (but that one is writ­ten in En­glish) or a Borges short story Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius (not writ­ten in an un­known script ei­ther).

After its pub­lish­ing the Codex was a rare and quite ex­pen­sive book, which might have con­tribut­ed to its aura of mys­tery that sur­rounds it and made it a cult item. For­tu­nate­ly, re­cent reed­i­tions are much more af­ford­able and so it be­came more ac­ces­si­ble to a wider cir­cle of in­ter­est­ed pub­lic.

Struktura

Kni­ha ses­tá­vá ze dvou svaz­ků, kte­ré pů­vod­ně vyš­ly zvlášť, no­věj­ší vy­dá­ní je však spo­ju­jí do jed­no­ho. Ten­to fakt je zřej­mý z čís­lo­vá­ní strá­nek, kte­ré za­čí­ná v dru­hém svaz­ku zno­vu od po­čát­ku.

Na za­čát­ku kni­hy je zjev­ně dvou­díl­ný ú­vod, kte­rý je roz­li­ši­tel­ný kro­mě ob­sa­hu též pod­le čís­lo­vá­ní strá­nek, kte­ré má jed­nu ne­bo dvě teč­ky na­ho­ře vle­vo.

Kaž­dá ka­pi­to­la má jed­nu strán­ku ú­vo­du a jed­nu strán­ku ob­sa­hu, ná­sle­do­va­né vlast­ním ma­te­ri­ál­em ka­pi­to­ly. Vět­ši­na ka­pi­tol má před ú­vo­dem ješ­tě ti­tul­ní strán­ku: z vět­ší čás­ti prázd­nou strán­ku s řád­kem tex­tu a ma­lým ob­ráz­kem.

Běž­ná strán­ka má na­ho­ře krát­ký ti­tu­lek vel­ký­mi pís­me­ny a do­le pod ča­rou čís­lo strán­ky v se­ra­fin­ských čís­lech.

Structure

The book con­sists of two vol­umes, that were phys­i­cal­ly sep­a­rate when it was first pub­lish­ed, newer edi­tions put them to­gether how­ever. This fact is ap­par­ent from page num­ber­ing that re­starts with the vol­ume two.

The vol­umes are di­vid­ed into chap­ters, sub­ject of which can be guessed from the il­lus­tra­tions:

The book starts with an ap­parent pro­logue in two parts, dis­cern­ible from both il­lus­tra­tions and dis­tinct page num­ber­ing with one or two up­per dots.

Each chap­ter has one intro­duction page and one page of con­tent list, fol­lowed by the ac­tu-al chap­ter. Most chap­ters also have ti­tle page be­fore the intro­duction: large­ly empty page with short ti­tle and a drawing in the mid­dle.

Regular chap­mater page has short ti­tle in ma­jus­cule let­ters at the top and page num­ber in the bot­tom under a line.

In the end of the sec­ond vol­ume there are few pages that give im­pres­sion of an after­word and in­dex.

Codex Seraphinianus je ru­ko­pi­sem na­psa­ným u­měl­ým pís­mem vy­tvo­ře­ným pro ten­to ú­čel svým au­to­rem. Pís­mo je psá­no zle­va do­pra­va a shora do­lů ve sty­lu při­po­mí­na­jí­cím běž­né psa­cí pís­mo (kur­zí­vu) avšak jed­no­tli­vá pís­me­na ne­od­po­ví­da­jí žád­né­mu zná­mé­mu psa­cí­mu sys­té­mu. Pro pís­mo Ko­de­xu je cha­rak­te­ris­tic­ká ten­ká, ne­stí­no­va­ná lin­ka vy­tvá­ře­jí­cí čet­né křiv­ky, zá­hy­by a smyč­ky. Po­u­ží­vá­na jsou ma­lá i vel­ká pís­me­na. Ma­lá pís­me­na na se­be ply­nu­le na­va­zu­jí a je ob­tíž­né od sebe od­li­šit jed­not­li­vé zna­ky. Pís­mo po­u­ží­vá dia­kri­ti­ku ja­ko jsou teč­ky, vl­nov­ky, stříš­ky ne­bo krou­žky. Text ob­sa­hu­je množ­ství dal­ších zna­ček, někdy pů­so­bí­cí­ch ja­ko vzor­ce, jin­dy při­po­mí­nají spe­ci­ál­ní no­ta­ce. V tex­tu je rov­něž vlo­že­na řa­da ad hoc sché­mat, ta­bu­lek, ná­čr­tů, gra­fů apod. Ce­lá tex­to­vá strán­ka kni­hy pů­so­bí ne­o­by­čej­ně pro­pra­co­va­ně a vě­ro­hod­ně. Čte­nář má po­cit, že ru­ko­pis ob­sa­hu­je vel­ké množ­st­ví vel­mi de­tail­ních in­for­ma­cí.

V kni­ze je ně­ko­lik pří­pa­dů, kde se pís­mo vys­ky­tu­je ve for­mě, kte­rá ja­ko by ho vys­vět­lo­va­la pří­pad­ně a­na­ly­zo­va­la. Např. v ú­vo­du ka­pi­to­ly „Psaní“ jsou vy­psa­ná i­zo­lo­va­ná pís­me­na se­ra­fin­ské ma­jus­ku­le. Jin­de je za­se ob­rá­zek ná­pad­ně při­po­mí­na­jí­cí Ro­set­tskou desku – bo­hu­žel, ja­ko pís­mo Ko­dexu je dru­hé pís­mo též zce­la ci­zí a ne­sro­zu­mi­te­lné.

Pod­le všech in­di­cií se však za tou­to pro­pra­co­va­nou a zdán­li­vě hlu­bo­kou kon­struk­cí ne­na­chá­zí žád­ný skry­tý smy­sl. Lui­gi Se­ra­fi­ni sám tr­vá na tom, že text je zce­la bez­ob­saž­ný a je­ho cí­lem je na­vo­dit ve čte­ná­ři po­cit, kte­rý má ma­lé dí­tě, kte­ré ješ­tě ne­u­mí číst. Něk­te­ří lidé se sna­ži­li pís­mo a text ana­ly­zo­vat a ves­měs doš­li k zá­vě­ru pot­vr­zu­jí­cí­mu Se­ra­fi­ni­ho tvr­ze­ní: sta­tis­ti­ky výs­ky­tu jed­not­li­vých zna­ků ne­od­po­ví­da­jí di­stri­bu­cím v běž­ných ja­zy­cí­ch, je­jich po­čet je pře­kva­pi­vě vel­ký, slo­va z ob­sa­hu se ne­vys­ky­tu­jí ve vlast­ním tex­tu, na ru­ko­pis je pra­vý ok­raj pří­liš dob­ře za­rov­na­ný atd. Po­ně­kud zne­po­ko­ji­vé v tom­to oh­le­du však je, že čís­lo­vá­ní strá­nek má svůj řád, kte­rý lze odhalit (Ivan Der­žan­ský a Al­lan C. Wechs­ler ne­zá­vis­le na sobě roz­luš­ti­li čí­sel­ný sys­tém Ko­de­xu a zji­sti­li, že po­u­ží­vá zá­klad 21). Tak­že kdo­ví, mož­ná nás Se­ra­fi­ni zá­měr­ně kla­me a text v so­bě skrý­vá sys­tém, kte­rý stá­le če­ká na své od­ha­le­ní.

The Script

Codex Seraphinianus is a manu­script writ­ten in a script con­struct­ed by its au­thor. The script is writ­ten left-to-right and top-to-bot­tom in a style sim­i­lar to usual cur­sive hand­writ­ing, but the ac­tu­al glyphs are not those of any known writ­ing sys­tem. The Codex's script is dis­tinct­ly curvi­lin­ear in char­ac­ter with abun­dance of loops and knots. It has sep­a­rate up­per and lower case, the lat­ter is smooth­ly con­nect­ed so it is dif­fi­cult to tell in­di­vid­u­al glyphs apart. The script also uses dia­critics in form of dots, tildes, carons or cir­cles. Ad­di­tion­al as­sort­ed marks of all kinds are pre­sent that give im­pres­sion of for­mu­lae or spe­cial no­ta­tions. All in all the tex­tu­al side of the book looks ex­treme­ly re­al­is­tic and gives in­tense feel of high in­for­ma­tion den­sity.

In few places there seem to be self-re­flec­tive pas­sages that ap­pear to ana­lyze or de­scribe the script it­self. In the intro­duction to “Writ­ing” there is a list of free stand­ing up­per­case let­ters, in an­oth­er place there is draw­ing of what strong­ly re­sem­bles the Roset­ta Stone. Un­for­tu­nate­ly, the other script is as mys­te­ri­ous as the seraphini­an one.

At any rate, by all ev­i­dence there is no hid­den mean­ing be­hind this deep and elabor­ate façade. Lui­gi Serafini him­self in­sists on the text bei­ng pure­ly asemic and in­tend­ed to in­duce the feel­ing of an il­liter­ate child brows­ing a book for adults. Few peo­ple tried to ana­lyze the writ­ing and most of them came to agree with Serafini's as­ser­tions: The glyph statis­tics are un­reason­ably flat, there are too many of them, “words” from the index are not found in the chap­ters they refer to, the right mar­gin is re­mark­ably well jus­ti­fied for a hand­writ­ing and so on. In this con­text it is some­what dis­quiet­ing that the page num­bers ac­tu-ally are known to be de­cipher­able (Ivan Der­zhan­ski and Allan C. Wechs­ler in­de­pen­dent­ly cracked the num­ber­ing scheme and found that it uses base 21). Maybe Serafini is just pulling our nose and there's a sys­tem in all this mad­ness after all?
