ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Purpose of this geocache is to connect people over borders, giving deeper reflection on our interesting, common history.

Aland Islands are very fascinating not only by present times and mixture of Swedish and Finnish influence. Also history was surprising from actual point of view.

After Treaty of Fredrikshamn in September 1809, along with Finland, Aland Islands were ceded to Russia.
Sweden didn't secure in treaty, that Alands will remain unfortified. It caused Russians started to fortify islands with huge fortress in Bomarsund. Part of builders were Polish soldiers exiled there after defeat of November Uprising in 1831.

Fortress and military presence on the islands could threaten British military and commercial interests. As a repercussion and as part of the campaign in the Baltic during the Crimean War against Russia, British and French forces captured and destroyed the fortress.
The 1856 Treaty of Paris demilitarised the entire area. And today Aland Islands still are demilitarised zone.

There's also another trail of Polish presence here. In XVI century Polish princess and the wife of John III of Sweden: Catherine Jagiellon.  She was born in Cracow, Poland as a Polish princess. Then she became Duchess of Finland (1562–83), Queen of Sweden (1569–83) and Grand Princess of Finland (1581–83). She lived on Aland Islands, about 10 km from present geocache starting point.
