Das Schloss wurde Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts von Graf Thun erbaut. Zuerst war es nur ein Jagdschloss und wurde "Thunhof" genannt. Als Graf Thun starb, erbte es seine Schwester. Nach einigen Besitzwechseln ließ Maria Theresia den "Thunhof" 1742 ankaufen. Sie ließ das Schloss umbauen und machte es zum Wohnsitz ihrer Mutter, Kaiserinwitwe Elisabeth Christine. Nach ihrem Tod ließ Maria Theresia zuerst adelige, später auch bürgerliche Kinder im Schloss Hetzendorf gegen Pocken impfen. Die Pockenimpfung war neu, und die Kinder durften 3 bis 4 Wochen zur Kontrolle bleiben und mit ihren Familien im Schloss wohnen. Seit 1946 ist die Modeschule Hetzendorf im Schloss untergebracht. Für Hochzeiten kann das Schloss angemietet werden.
Der hintere Teil des Schlossparks ist vom Altmannsdorfer Anger aus öffentlich zugänglich. Die Öffnungszeiten konnte ich nicht herausfinden, weder vor Ort noch im www. Da sich auch ein Kinderspielplatz im Park befindet, gehe ich davon aus, dass der Park sicher geöffnet ist, solange es hell ist.

The castle was built by Count Thun at the end of the 17th century. At first it was just a hunting lodge and was called "Thunhof". When Count Thun died, his sister inherited it. After some changes of ownership Maria Theresia bought the "Thunhof" in 1742. She had the castle rebuilt and made it the residence of her mother, the Empress Dowager Elisabeth Christine. After her death, Maria Theresia first had noble, and later also middle-class, children vaccinated against smallpox at Schloss Hetzendorf. The smallpox vaccine was new and the children were allowed to stay under scrutiny for 3 to 4 weeks and to live in the castle with their families. Since 1946 the fashion school Hetzendorf is housed in the castle. For weddings, the castle can be rented.
The rear part of the park is open to the public and can be accessed from Altmannsdorfer Anger. I was not able to find information about the opening hours, neither on site nor in the www. Since there is also a children's playground in the park I assume that the park is certainly open during daylight.
