Waste is carried by ocean currents and washes ashore in the Svalbard archipelago. For almost 20 years, inhabitants and visitors have been encouraged to pick up marine debris when they visit the coast to avoid pictures like this:
We are visiting Svalbard from 18/05/2019 to 23/05/2019 and want to join the Clean up Svalbard campaign.
On 22/05/2019 we meet in front of the entrance of the Svalbard Museum at 14:00. At 14:15 we will walk to the beach and pick up any plastic or other marine debris we find along the confluence of the Longyearbyen River and put them into bags we got from the governor in advance. After returning from the beach we will walk to the dumpster located in the harbour to drop the collected waste there and take a group picture. We will stay inside the settlement area in Longyearbyen so we don't need firearms.
At 16:00 we will close the event. The logbook will be accessible all the time. Hopefully some other cachers are there at the same time, too. Please log "Will attend" in advance so we can estimate how large the group will be...
