Geocache Description:

This cache is not at the published co-ordinates, the information you need to locate it however can be found by visiting the War Memorial and answering the questions below.

This is a small cache placed in a camo bag a short walking distance away from the War Memorial and will take you approx. 5-10 minutes to get to (depending on your speed of walking).

There is room for a potential TB and perhaps the odd swap.

There is only a logbook and a pencil in the cache at time of placing.

The Memorial

The main Ely War Memorial is grade 1 listed and located in Market Square at the heart of the city. It was unveiled on 30th April 1922 and attended by approx. 5000 people.

It is a dome shaped memorial built into the medieval stone wall to the Almonry. It has two arch braces in the roof which split it into three sections and a decorative brace across the centre.

On either side of the archway you will see the shields of the Diocese of Ely (crowns) and Ely Cathedral (keys).

At the centre is a bronze cross above a plaque which reads "Remember with gratitude the men who laid down their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1918".

Today there are 12 plaques which are inscribed with the names of the heroes who died during the First World War and Second World War.

The 4 larger plaques show the names of the 224 heroes who lost their lives during the First World War (1914 - 1918).

The 8 smaller plaques in the upper section show the names of the 94 heroes who lost their lives during the Second World War (1939 - 1945).

The plaque at the upper centre is placed in memory for all the heroes who lost their lives from 1945 to the present day.

The Questions

Please read all instructions very carefully and carry out the necessary arithmetic. If there are any issues then please feel free to message us for assistance.

First World War (Larger Plaques, lower section)

Count the number of names in the larger plaques in the lower section to give the numbers you need for the northerly coordinates.

A = ("Beer" + "Clark" + "Gent") x ("Gray" + "Layton")

B = "Covill" - "Elsegood"

C = ("Lee" / "Royal") + "Wise"

D = ("McGee" - "Wayman") + "Woodbine"

Second World War (Smaller Plaques, upper section)

To get the numbers you need for the easterly coordinates.

Look at the three plaques in the top left of the memorial:

E = Number of letters in the last name of "C.L.W." + Number of letters in the last name of "R.T.A" - "1"

Look at the three plaques in the upper centre of the memorial:

Count the number of names:

F = "Huckle" - "Osborne"

Look at the three plaques in the top right of the memorial:

In the middle plaque of the three count down 5 names:

G = "Number of letters in the last name of this hero" - "6"

Look at the two shields either side of the arch:

H = "Number of Crowns" x "Number of Keys"
