“Furnas é uma freguesia portuguesa do concelho da Povoação, com 70,20 km² de área e cerca de mil e quinhentos habitantes. A sua densidade populacional é 42,5 hab/km². Localiza-se a este de Ponta Delgada e Lagoa e sudeste de Ribeira Grande. Confronta com o Oceano Atlântico a sul e montanhas a norte. As principais actividades económicas são a agricultura e turismo.
As Furnas são muito conhecidas pelas suas águas termais, nomeadamente as caldeiras e as suas piscinas térmicas. Também é nas Furnas que se encontra uma lagoa, a Lagoa das Furnas. Existem “caldeiras” e fumarolas, quer na freguesia quer na Lagoa das Furnas.
São também tradicionais das Furnas, os bolos lêvedos, o curioso “cozido nas caldeiras” (ou a bacalhoada) onde os ingredientes são cozinhados debaixo da terra sob o calor dos vulcões (a carne demora cerca de 5 a 6 horas e o bacalhau cerca de 3 a 4 horas), os inhames das Furnas, os queijos das Furnas e as águas minerais.
Esta localidade possui uma das maiores e mais diversificadas colecções botânicas do arquipélago, sendo de salientar a importante colecção de Camélias existente nesta localidade, que leva á organização da importante Exposição das Camélias. As Furnas também são muito conhecidas pela beleza excepcional dos tapetes de flores, presentes em algumas das principais festividades religiosas.

"Furnas is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Povoação, with 70.20 km² of area and about one thousand five hundred inhabitants. Its population density is 42,5 hab / km ². It is located east of Ponta Delgada and Lagoa and southeast of Ribeira Grande. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the south and mountains to the north. The main economic activities are agriculture and tourism.
The Furnas are well known for their hot springs, namely the boilers and thermal pools.It is also in Furnas that there is a lagoon, the Furnas Lagoon. There are "boilers" and fumaroles, both in the parish as well as in the Furnas Lagoon.
They are also traditional of Furnas, the pasty cakes, the curious "boiled in the boilers" (or the bacalhoada) where the ingredients are cooked under the earth under the heat of the volcanoes (the meat takes about 5 to 6 hours and the cod about 3 to 4 hours), the Furnas yams, the Furnas cheeses and the mineral waters.
This locality has one of the largest and most diverse botanical collections of the archipelago, and it is worth noting the important collection of Camellias existing in this locality, which leads to the organization of the important Camellias Exhibition. The Furnas are also well known for the exceptional beauty of the flower carpets, present at some of the major religious festivities.
