Geocache Description:

This is a large cache located alongside a 4x4 trail on Papkuilsfontein, a private guest farm overlooking the Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve in the Niewoudtville area.

Nieuwoudtville is internationally renowned for it’s spring flowers and is regarded as the bulb capital of the world. This makes the area a popular destination for all flower lovers and outdoor types, particularly during the flower season.

It is not advisable to attempt to reach the cache in a conventional motorcar, as the terrain is not suitable for vehicles with low ground clearance. The cache can be reached by 4X4 or by hiking. The route is along an established farm track, complete with some sandy, marshy and rocky sections. The route utilises a section of the official 4X4 trail laid out on the farm, although it is not necessary to complete the trail to reach the cache. The cache was placed shortly after some heavy rainfall in the region. This made driving to the cache location even more interesting as we had to contend with one or two waterlogged stretches, as well as an unexpected mud patch.

En-route to the cache, the farm track leads to the edge a sandy field that has been recently ploughed and planted with rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis). It is essential to stay on the extreme left side of this field to avoid damaging any of the tea plants. For those without a 4X4, a good starting point for hiking to the cache would be somewhere along the track between the guest cottage (S031º 022.991 E019º 009.515), and the point where it reaches this ploughed field (S031º 032.941 E019º 007.358)

While no entry fee is payable, it is a requirement that the owners of the farm be informed of your intended visit, as they are best placed to advise on prevailing local conditions and to provide assistance with vehicle recovery if necessary, particularly during the wetter months of the year.

The cache consists of a white two-litre plastic bucket containing an assortment of useful camping goodies, including a billycan, a survival whistle, salt water soap, Tabard, a stainless steel tea caddy, three boxes of waterproof matches, as well as a disposable camera and of course, a logbook. The logbook is the official “Rite in the Rain” logbook, which is difficult to write in using a conventional ballpoint pen. A roller-ball works well and one has been left in the cache for this reason, please don’t remove it.

Please take a picture of yourself and your 4X4 if applicable and hand the camera to farm owners when the last picture has been taken.
