Geocache Description:

A little bridge

Just of the junction of Whittington Way and Rayners Lane, this unusual little triangle sits alone separated from Yeading Walk across the road. Anyone who isn't local would just assume that it was originally part of that park, and a road redevelopment separated the two. Except that isn't the case - while Whittington Way was only added in the 1930's, Rayners Lane is much, much older. While it predates Yeading Walk by at least a couple of hundred years, the nearby road was known as Bourne Lane until the 19th century as it crossed several streams.

The Metro-Land expansion drastically changed the local area around Pinner. Although the Metropolitan Railway came through the area in the late 19th century, the population boom didn't follow nearby until the 1920s and 30s. This bridge sits on the edge of what would have been a field of Cannon Farm (the old farmhouse was demolished to make way for the pub at the other end of Whittington Way). It is likely that the bridge was built during this expansion as a decorative feature, since there wasn't enough room to slot in a further house.

Based on the building materials used, it's unlikely that this particular bridge dates back much beyond the Metro-Land period, although at one point towards the end of the 19th century the maps show that the area directly adjacent to the bridge was expanded into a small water reservoir. Around this period Cannon Farm kept cattle and grew hay and other animal feeds.

Of course, where you'll find this cache isn't on that bridge, instead it's on the 1930's road bridge crossing Yeading Brook. Look for a nano, which you'll be able to reach from the pavement.

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. There is a stats listing run by Billiethecat, so you can see how many Little Bridges you have found, you can find it here:- https://littlebridgesseries.wordpress.com/ . If you would like to add to the series, please contact Stan on stanthews@aol.com and he will give you a number for your bridge, to qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xxxx then the name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to stats list.
