Inside Needles' Cave [Terceira - Açores] Traditional Geocache

A Gruta das Agulhas situa-se na Ponta dos Coelhos, no Concelho de Angra do Heroísmo. Trata-se de um característico tubo de lava com uma localização curiosa junto à costa, com saída para o mar.

A Gruta das Agulhas de origem vulcânica, teve a sua origem na erupção do vulcão do Algar do Carvão, no interior da ilha Terceira.

A formação geológica desta gruta deve-se à escorrência de lava líquida proveniente da erupção do Algar do Carvão que fluiu para o mar atingindo a costa da ilha desde a Serretinha, na freguesia da Feteira, até ao Porto Judeu, formando toda uma zona costeira de pedra preta e queimada caracterizada pelas suas pedras negras de grandes dimensões.

A Gruta das Agulhas tem várias ramificações. No seu interior poderão ser observadas estruturas geológicas diversas como: escorrências de diferentes tipos de lava, estalactites (pingos de lava) e balcões laterais.

Esses balcões foram formados pelos diferentes níveis das distintas correntes de lava.

A Gruta das Agulhas deve o seu nome a uma grande quantidade de formações sedimentares minúsculas de sílica em forma de “agulhas”, que cobrem as paredes e os tectos da gruta, especialmente os balcões.

The Needles' Cave is located at Ponta dos Coelhos, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo. It is a characteristic lava tube with a curious location by the coast, with exit to the sea.

The Needles' Cave is volcanic origin, originated in the eruption of the volcano of Algar do Carvão, inside the Terceira island.

The geological formation of this cave is due to the scurrence of liquid lava from the eruption of the Algar do Carvão that flowed to the sea reaching the coast of the island from Serretinha, in the parish of Feteira, to Porto Judeu, forming a whole coastal zone of black and burned stone characterized by its large black stones.

The Needles' Cave has several ramifications. In its interior, various geological structures can be observed, such as: Different types of lava, stalactites (lava dripping) and side counters.

These counters were formed by the different levels of the distinct lava currents.

The Needles' Cave owes its name to a large number of tiny sedimentary formations of silica in the form of "needles", which cover the walls and ceilings of the cave, especially the balconies.

Para aceder à cache terão que descer a falésia até ao nível do mar e entrar dentro da Gruta das Agulhas através do Waypoint Entrada.

Prestem muita atenção porque a entrada só é possível em segurança, na maré baixa e em condições de mar calmo.

Depois de entrarem na gruta deverão caminhar cerca de 150 metros até a uma passagem mais apertada que poderão identificar no Spoiler #1.

Deverão rastejar para atravessar essa passagem e encontrarão a cache cerca de 25 metros depois, debaixo de um monte de pedras (spoiler #2).

Não é recomendável fazer esta cache sozinhos ou de noite. Envolve alguns riscos e algum perigo

Evitem tocar nas paredes e não removam nada de dentro da gruta.

To access the cache you will need to descend the cliff to the see level and enter into the Needles' Cave through the Waypoint Entrance.

Pay close attention because the entrance is only possible in safety, at the low tide and without sea waves.

After entering the cave, you should walk about 150 meters until you reach a tight passage that you can identify on the photo Spoiler #1.

You must crawl to cross this tight passage and to find the cache container about 25 meters away, under a pile of stones (spoiler #2).

It is not recommended to do this cache alone or at night. It's very dangerous and involves some risks.

Avoid touching the walls and do not remove anything from inside the cave.
