Geocache Description:

The foundation stone of All Saint's church was laid in 1905 by workmen including many voluntary helpers – so it just missed out at being a ‘Victorian’ building. Before this, services were held in a coach house or barn in Kitsbury Road behind the Berkhamsted Union Workhouse. The workhouse was later pulled down and replaced with the All Saints' Iron Room, built in Cross Oak Road in the 1890's; it was made of corrugated iron, hence its name, but was better known as the Tin Tabernacle. Many articles of church furniture from that time are still used in All Saints' today. The original plans included twin towers at an extended western end of the church to rival those of Westminster Abbey, but these were not included.

A fragment of a former Norman font, stated in Cobb's History of Berkhamsted as being preserved in St. Peter's, was transferred to All Saints' and built into the chancel wall; it is at the back of the church on the right of the small worship area, below the aumbry. At the same time, a font that was given to St Peter's in 1662, was also moved to All Saints'.

In the 1970s, the Anglican congregation at All Saints and the Methodists in Berkhamsted began the first stages of coming together. All Saints church hall (then a separate building) was in need of repairs, and the Methodists were outgrowing their chapel on the High Street. It was agreed that All Saints should be a shared building, which could be modernised and enlarged, including creation of upper and lower halls, toilets and a kitchen . Unfortunately, All Saint's lost it's two church bells at this time.
