Church Micro 698...Thundridge
The church of St. Mary at Thundridge consists of chancel, north vestry, nave and west tower. The church was built in 1853 of squared rubble with stone dressings to take the place of the old church of which only the tower now remains. On the erection of the new church, Thundridge old church which was dedicated variously to All Saints and to St. Mary was pulled down. There was a chapel to Hugh de Grentmesnil who was tenant in 1086. The tower of the old church which was erected in the 15th century is built of flint rubble with stone dressings and is of three stages with angle buttresses on the west. The second stage has narrow single lights on the north, south and west faces and a sundial on the south. Each face of the belfry stage has a window of two trefoiled lights with a quatrefoiled opening in the head under a four-centred arch.
