Geocache Description:

St Pancras, Pancrasweek

St Pancras Church in Pancrasweek (Pancraswyke) sits atop a hill not far from the river Tamar and visible as one approaches from the Bude direction. Pancrasweek is a rural community of about 70 dwellings, mainly farms, a village hall, but no village and it is one of the largest parishes in Devon.

The building dates from around the twelfth century in parts, with later additions. It has a carved double roof in the wagon style, a Jacobean pulpit and a 12th century font.  The tower has a peal of five bells. The church was re-roofed in the 1900’s.

Parish church. Chancel C13 in part, church rebuilt and enlarged C15, restored 1894-8 and 1927. Squared and coursed local stone, granite dressings, slate roofs. There are issues with the tower masonry with cracking and bulging. The church's inspecting architect has advised that the bells are not rung in order to prevent further movement. There are also holes in the roof and fallen slates in the churchyard. The church was offered a Heritage Lottery Fund Grant for Places of Worship in 2017 and development work is underway.

Access to the Church is currently difficult but cache is available.
