Geocache Description:

There are a number of roads into Fishlake, each with a similar sign to welcome the traveller to the village. Sour Lane brings you in to Fishlake from the East, crossing the River Don via Jubilee Bridge.

The village sign depicts the Grade 1 listed St Cuthbert's church,
parts of which date from the 12th century.

Fishlake is an ancient village, with origins well before the Norman conquest, later being mentioned as 'Fiscelac' in the Domesday book. Beside the church, notable features of the village include the remains of two 'butter crosses', the pinfold, where a pinder held stray animals and two former corn mills, on the outskirts.

Towards the end of the medieval period, the village became an inland port and goods were brought in via the River Humber and River Don. A former customs house sits beside 'The Landing' and Fishlake was also known for ship-building in this period.

In the early 17th century, Cornelius Vermuyden was chartered by Charles I and the area was drained, it is believed that at the time, there were twelve pubs in and around Fishlake, to 'slake the thirst of the Dutch workers'. There are currently just two remaining pubs within the village.

About Village Sign Caches

This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!

More information, bookmarks and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do.
I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at www.villagesignseries.co.uk
so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
