The Church
Parking is availble for many vehicles on the opposite side of the road to the chapel.
This is a simple two storey building of typical Methodist Chapel appearance with no direct connection between the two floors, the ground floor is a meeting room and the first floor chapel is approached by a separate staircase from the outside at the rear corner.
Associations with William O’Bryan who founded the Bible Christians and was later expelled from Gunwen Chapel. He continued evangelizing when he went to New York and Canada.
The chapel is on the Saints Way which is used by walkers and cyclists, and facing a car park used by visitors to nearby Helman Tor which has Neolithic origins.
William O'Bryan was born William Bryant at the nearby Gunwen Farm and became a methodist. He gave the land and helped build the first chapel on this site. He split from the mainstream Weslyan Methodists and formed the Bible Christian movement which supported women as preachers known as Female Special Agents.
He evangalised in the USA and Canada and died in New York. Eventually, the Bible Christians re-united with mainstream methodists in the early part of the 20th century.
The iconic church at Gunwen has recently been extensively and sympathetically modernised and refurbished to provide both a church on the first floor and a multi-functional meeting room on the ground floor.
