Geocache Description:

St Hildas Church, Westward

The present church dates from 1785-6 on a C16th site (Clergy identified back to 1571) The church retains its C18th character externally. Internal furnishings and the boarded ceiling are C19th. The church is of simple rectangular plan form with no distinction between nave and chancel. There are three bays of triple lancet windows to the north and south sides and a single group of three lancet windows to the east end. Window surrounds are of tooled red sandstone without mouldings or hood moulds. The walling stone is hammer dressed between quoins with draughted margins and punched panels. The most unusual characteristic of the church is the entrance porch of substantial stone construction which steps in to support a belfry of relatively modest proportions surmounted by a simple, undecorated conical spire of even more modest proportions. The west end gable is surmounted by a diminutive version of the belfry and spire. Stained glass windows to the west end and south walls are C19th. There is a pair of finely wrought decorative iron gates at the entrance to the churchyard.

The cache has been placed in memory of my Father who's ashes have been interned in the chuch graveyard by my Grandparents graves.

The cache is a small magnetic micro, you may need tweezers to extract the log and you will need to bring your own pen.
