Kīlauea is a currently active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands. On May 17, 2018 the volcano explosively erupted, throwing ash 30,000 feet into the air. Although the eruptions destroyed over 700 houses over several months, only one fatality has been reported. To date the eruptions have been temporarily paused since September, 2018.
