Geocache Description:

Conservation Halton Turkey Vulture

The Turkey Vulture is the official mascot of Conservation Halton.  They are found in abundance throughout the Halton Watersheds, floating on the thermals, that rise along the valleys and steep slopes of the escarpment.

The turkey vulture, is frequently called a “buzzard”.  When standing on the ground, where they are frequently spotted feeding on carrion, at a distance, resemble a wild turkey.  As you explore the area, and hike through the park looking for this series of caches, the large bird you see floating overhead, with wings resting in a “V”, and long fingertip like feathers, is a Turkey Vulture.  You just spotted one of the many birds throughout the Halton area.

Welcome to Kelso Conservation Area

Kelso Conservation Area is located near Milton Ontario and is owned and operated by Conservation Halton. This park has an area of 3.97 square kilometres.  The Park also offers 20 campsites, 18 picnic sites, and two camping/picnic mixed sites.  The Halton Region Museum is located on the Kelso grounds, and the park also features numerous marked mountain biking and hiking trails.

Lake Kelso

Lake Kelso is a man-made reservoir built to control flooding of Sixteen Mile Creek in Milton, Ontario.  One of the founders of Conservation Halton, Allan Day, recalls that before the reservoir was built, "Milton used to get flooded every spring thaw. Milton's main street would get flooded." It was Day who convinced the previous landowner to sell his property to the sixteen-Mile Creek Authority in 1961.

Glen Eden

The Glen Eden ski area is located within the Kelso Conservation Area, with skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. The ski area is owned and operated by the Conservation Halton.  Lake Kelso provides a natural, economical and convenient source of very cold water for snow-making for Glen Eden; negating the need to use water from Halton's main line utility service.  The Glen Eden ski area is highly visible from the eastbound lane of Highway 401 near Milton, Ontario.
