This is a 2 stage multi cache with some parking at both points. Go to the memorial to get the numbers for the final which is a short walk or drive away. The cache is a shallow screw topped camouflaged container; please bring a pen. There is limited space for swappable items etc but there is a keyring in to start it off.
Langton War Memorial is between Great Langton and Little Langton. The memorial can be found opposite the lane that leads to St. Wilfrid's Church.
The memorial consists of a 4 metre high sandstone wheel cross with sword and laurel wreath on a tapered square base in a fenced area. It bears the names and ranks of seven local heroes who gave their lives in the First World War, 1914 to 1918.
The memorial is dedicated -
“To The Glory Of God And In Grateful Remembrance Of The Men Of This Parish Who Gave Their Lives For Us In The Great War 1914 -1918”.
It also has a touching verse on its base. Read the verse to work out the co-ordinates for the final which is a short walk or drive away on the same road.
The cache can be found at N54° 21.STU W001° 32.XYZ where -
S = number of letters in the 11th word of the verse
T = total of letters in the 4th and 5th words of the verse
U = number of letters in the 12th word of the verse
X = number of letters in the 7th word of the verse
Y = number of letters in the 16th word of the verse
Z = the same as U minus Y
Checksum = 26
Gunner William Peacock, Royal Field Artillery, is sadly difficult to trace. All that could be found is that he seems to have been killed at Salisbury on 30th December 1916, aged just 18. He is buried in St. Wilfrid's churchyard; the little church is up the track opposite the memorial. There is a cache outside the church.
Well done to China Doll 47 for First to Find very quickly after publication.
Please ensure that the cache is replaced out of sight, and as always, please treat the memorial, its surrounds, and the vegetation at the final location with the appropriate respect.
