Geocache Description:

It is generally accepted that within Dartmoor there exists some of the most remote places to be found anywhere within mainland England & Wales, and it appears that you have to go as far north as Northumberland to find anywhere more remote.  There is no real definition of remote, but it is generally accepted to be the distance from the point in question to the nearest public road.  On Dartmoor that raises another question - is the army road on the north moor a public road or not.  The north section of this road does allow public access and could therefore be considered to be a public road or conversely it could be argued that the road is not in public ownership.

It is therefore difficult to defined one particular point that is the most remote on Dartmoor, but however you consider the status of the Army road, it is easy to determine that the most remote point on Dartmoor is somewhere on Black Ridge.  There are already 2 caches on this ridge, the northern one probably the most remote cache ignoring the army road completely, the southern one assuming that it has public access on the north section only.  This cache has been placed somewhere between these 2 existing caches and therefore could be considered to be the average most remote cache on Dartmoor!  Ignoring the Army road, this cache is 6.4km to the nearest public road,

Please Note: This is a Military Training Area on which live firing and other pyrotechnics may be used. The area is generally open public access. One of the safety rules for public access is:- Do not, (and ensure that children do not) approach, touch or pick up any metal objects lying on the ground. Please obey all bylaws and locally posted information concerning times when the area may be closed. These may be physical barriers, marker posts, flags, lights or manned control posts.

The weather on Dartmoor can change suddenly and unexpectedly and ALL types of weather conditions can be experienced. Please ensure that you have the correct clothing and map & compass (and know how to use them). Please do NOT rely solely on your GPS.

I would like to thank the Dartmoor National Park Authority for their kind permission to place this cache, which has been placed according to the geocaching guidelines.
