De geschiedenis 'Het Joodse Poortje' herinnert de inwoners van Gouda aan de vroegere directrice van het joodse oude mannen- en vrouwenhuis. In april 1943 werden zowel alle bewoners als het personeel weggevoerd. Alleen de directrice heeft de oorlog overleefd. In de 19e eeuw kende Gouda een bloeiende joodse gemeente. Tijdens de bezetting zijn meer dan 300 joden uit Gouda omgekomen in de concentratiekampen. Het monument is geplaatst op het Raoul Wallenbergplantsoen. De Zweedse diplomaat Wallenberg hielp in de Tweede Wereldoorlog veel joden uit Hongarije ontsnappen. Aan het einde van de oorlog werd Wallenberg gevangen genomen door Russische soldaten. Daarna heeft men niets meer van hem vernomen. Onthulling Het monument is onthuld in 1980. Oorspronkelijk was het poortje de toegang tot de Joodse begraafplaats in Gouda.
