Romanby is, or was, a village adjoining North Yorkshire’s County Town of Northallerton, The name is of Scandinavian origin, coming from Romund’s Farm but the name Romanby has been used since the 14th century. Although much developed since being recorded in the Domesday Book, the area retains its village character with an attractive green.
Romanby War Memorial, or Romanby Cenotaph, is a commemorative clock tower, with Memorial Panels on three sides. On the front is a panel dedicating the memorial to men who fell in the Great War, 1914 -1918. A panel of names of 8 men who died in the Second World War, 1939 – 1945 was added after that conflict and a single panel commemorates an airman also lost in the Second World War.
On the left and right are panels with the names of 14 men who lost their lives in the Great War, of whom six served in the Yorkshire Regiment, (The Green Howards).
With the greatest respect to all who fell in these or any other conflict, we have some details of F/O Gordon L. Hills, a wireless operator / air gunner. In July 1943 he was invested with the Distinguished Flying Medal by the King after flying fifty bombing operations with 76 Squadron based at Linton-on Ouse and was awarded the D.F.M. for gallantry in air operations. Later that year, he volunteered to fill a vacant crew place on a bomber taking part in a major operation. His plane was one of many lost that night. It was his 52nd and sadly his last mission; he was 20 years of age.
It is right that he, and all those named here and on every such memorial are remembered for their contribution to the freedom we enjoy.
