Der Holzapfel (Malus sylvestris), auch als Europäischer Wildapfel bezeichnet, ist eine Laubbaum-Art aus der Gattung der Äpfel (Malus) in der Familie der Rosengewächse (Rosaceae) und war Baum des Jahres 2013 in Deutschland. Der Holzapfel ist ein sommergrüner Baum, der Wuchshöhen von bis zu 10 m erreicht; überwiegend wächst er jedoch als grosser Strauch mit Wuchshöhen von 3 bis 5 m. Im April bis Mai erscheinen die rosa-weißen Blüten auf kahlen Blütenstielen. Die kugeligen Früchte sind gelbgrün mit roter Backe, haben nur einen Durchmesser von 2 bis 4 cm, sind herbsauer und holzig. Apfelsamen sind durch Amygdalin schwach giftig.
Malus sylvestris, the European crab apple, is a species of the genus Malus, native to Europe. Its scientific name means "forest apple" and the truly wild tree has thorns. Wild apple has an expanded crown and often appear more like a bush than a tree. It can live 80–100 years and grow up to 10 m tall with trunk diameters of 23–45 cm. Due to its weak competitiveness and high light requirement, wild apple exist mostly at the wet edge of forests. The flowers are hermaphrodite and are pollinated by insects. Its leaves are food of the caterpillars of the twin-spotted sphinx.
