Selon le petit Larousse, un calendrier est un système lié d’une manière plus ou moins stricte à la durée de révolution de la Terre autour du Soleil ou à celle de la Lune autour de la Terre et permettant de recenser les jours, les semaines, les mois et les années.
Il y a plusieurs calendriers : Chinois, Maya, Attique, Grec, Romain, Julien, Juif etc. De nos jours, le calendrier Grégorien est le plus utilisé. Il est un calendrier Solaire conçu à la fin du XVIè siècle pour corriger la dérive séculaire du calendrier Julien alors en usage. À la demande de Grégoire XIII, Christophorus Clavius prépara les bases d'un nouveau calendrier depuis 1579. Adopté par le Pape Grégoire XIII, dans la bulle pontificale "Inter gravissimas" du 24 février 1582, il est mis en application dans les États catholiques le 15 octobre 1582 (alors devenu le lendemain du 4 octobre1582. Son usage s'est ensuite progressivement répandu dans les pays protestants, et à l'ensemble du monde jusqu'au milieu du XXè siècle. Le calendrier Grégorien s'est imposé dans la majeure partie du monde pour les usages civils; de nombreux autres calendriers sont utilisés pour les usages religieux ou traditionnels. Ce calendrier porte le nom de son instigateur, le pape Grégoire XIII.

At the request of Gregory XIII, Christophorus Clavius prepared the bases of a new calendar in use since 1579. Adopted by Pope Gregory XIII, in the papal bull nicknamed «Inter gravissimas » on February 24 1582, it was applied throughout the Catholic States on October 15th, 1582 (which became the day after October 4th 1582). Its use progressively spread in other Protestant countries and throughout the world until the middle of the 20th century. The Gregorian calendar imposed itself in most of the world for civic use; a number of other calendars are used for religions or traditional use. This calendar bears the name of its instigator, Pope Gregory XIII.
