Geocache Description:

Greenwich Park Bonus

*** Updated Cartridge 15/3/2024 ***

Greenwich Park covers 73 hectares and is the oldest enclosed Royal Park. It is situated on a hillside with impressive views across the River Thames. Greenwich Park provides a setting for several historic buildings, including the Old Royal Observatory, the Royal Naval College, the National Maritime Museum and the Queen's House. Greenwich was the birthplace of Henry VIII and his two daughters Mary I and Elizabeth I. In the early 1600s, the park was laid out in the French style with many trees planted, some of which remain today. James I gave the palace and the park to his wife, Queen Anne, who commissioned Inigo Jones to design the Queen's House. Sir Christopher Wren was commissioned by Charles II to build The Royal Observatory, which is now part of the National Maritime Museum.

Parking can be an expensive nightmare in Greenwich, so if you can use public transport I would advise it. There are some car parks and even some roadside parking, but it can fill up very quickly. I have indicated an area where there is limited short term (2 hour) free parking.

This cache is a Bonus for the Wherigo cache GC7K9YR Greenwich Park. The Wherigo cartridge will highlight 14 interesting locations throughout the park (and just outside). To obtain the coordinates of the Greenwich Park cache you will need to visit any 6 of them and answer the questions correctly. If you fail to answer a question either try again or visit another location. Having visited 6 you could continue and visit 12 locations, answering 12 questions correctly and receiving the coordinates of this bonus cache. Due to the ban on the placement of caches within the Royal Park and proximity issues with the Gates of Greenwich series the caches are some distance outside the park, but within 1km of the given coordinates of the caches.

Download the cartridge you need to play Greenwich Park.
Find out more information about Wherigo caches here. This cache was created with Earwigo.

I have tested this on an Android device and would expect it to work on iphone. As there are 14 zones open at once I think Garmin devices will struggle, so please use a Smartphone.

TIME RESTRICTIONS - This Wherigo can only be played when the park is open, but the cache and the bonus cache are outside the park so can be found at any time. The park opens at 6:00 every day but closing times for the park change depending on the month; for more details see the Greenwich Park website. The bonus cache, a bison attached magnetically, is located to the north of the park.

In addition to this cache and the main Greenwich Park cache there are three other Wherigo caches in Greenwich - my GC9MTBP Maritime Greenwich Revisited which takes you for a walk around Greenwich Town, and GC4CJHK Church Micro 3690...Greenwich-St Alfege and GC568YW Views of London Reverse Cache, both by RubyShoos.

***** Congratulations to lisboa_bruno and Neirra on the FTF *****
