Geocache Description:

The Postbridge Clapper Bridge is almost certainly the most famous clapper bridge on Dartmoor and gets hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The exact age of the bridge is not known, but was constructed towards the end of the 14th century to enable packhorses to cross the river.

To find the cache approach the clapper bridge from the car park, cross the bridge and turn left towards the road. On the way you will need to count the following:

  1. How many paving slabs are there in a straight line when approaching the bridge from the west? Do not count any that are off to one side or any that are clearly part of the bridge = AB
  2. How many huge horizontal slabs are there on the clapper bridge? = C
  3. How many steps are there to climb onto the bridge from the east side? = D
  4. How many paving slabs are there when approaching the bridge the from the road at the north of the bridge? Only count the main ones you would walk on starting after the steps down from the road and including the big square one at the bridge itself. Do not count any off to the side. = EF

Checksum: A+B+C+D+E+F = 21

The cache can be found at N 50° 35.(A+D)(F)(E) W 003° 54.(C)(C+E)(B+C)

The cache can be found not far off the path heading south on the east side of the river.

I would like to thank the Dartmoor National Park Authority for their kind permission to place this cache, which has been placed according to the geocaching guidelines.

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. There is a stats listing run by Bloodsock, so you can see how many Little Bridges you have found, you can find it here:- https://littlebridgesseries.wordpress.com/ . If you would like to add to the series, please contact Stan on stanthews@aol.com and he will give you a number for your bridge, to qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xxxx then the name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to stats list.
