Most of the earth's mantle consists of solid rock. As a result of the high temperatures and pressures in the earth's core, a small part of the rock of the earth's mantle melts. Magma is formed by the melting of the rock. Because the magma has a different density than the solid rock, the magma slowly moves upwards through the mantle and can slowly solidify or mix with magma that is already present. The mixing with other magma is called magma differentiation and partly determines the chemical composition of the magma. When magma flows from the core of the earth via volcanism over the surface of the earth, magma is no longer called magma but lava. When lava solidifies on the earth's surface, an outflow rock arises.
Although thousands of different minerals are known, there is only a small group that crystallize in magma. This small group is called rock-forming minerals. Sanidine is one of those minerals, and belongs to the category of feldspars. Feldspars are rock-forming minerals, created by the solidification of lava on the earth's surface and the name is derived from the German words "Feld" and "Spath" which stands for stone in which there is no ore. There are three different types of feldspar; potassium aluminum silicates, sodium aluminosilicates and calcium aluminosilicates.
The sanidine mineral is made up of potassium (K), sodium (Na), aluminum (Al) and tectosilicate (Si), with the chemical formula (K,Na)(Si,Al)4O8 and the name is derived from the Greek words "sanis" and "idos", which stands for "plates" and "see". The sanidine mineral belongs due to its chemical composition among the potassium aluminum silicates, also known as potassium feldspars.
Here in the Drachenfeld's trachyte, the sanidine has a gray glass to pearl sheen, but it can also have a colorless, white or pinkish-white color.
Drachenfels trachyte
At the third location you stand in front of the Buurtoren. To the left and right of the door, the wall is made up of Drachenfeld's trachyte. The trachyte can be recognized by the gray color and contains mainly feldspar minerals. The Drachenfeld's trachyte is an outflow rock extracted from a 25 million years old, 321 meter high dead volcano, in the vicinity of the German city of Bonn and has been used as a building material since Roman times.
