All Saints Church Muggleswick

Muggleswick is a village and civil parish in a remote and peaceful corner of County Durham.

All Saints Church owes its origins to the Priors of Durham who had a retreat grange built by Prior Hugh of Darlington. A church was built in 1259, but the present building dates from circa 1728 with further rebuilding in the 19^th Century.

Today you can see some of the stone remains of the earlier grange.

Between the porch and the lychgate there is a family tombstone dedicated to the children of Ann and John Mayor. Ann Mayor’s name lives on as a public footpath known as Nanny Mayor’s Incline which was constructed as part of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway Line.

Ann, or Nanny Mayor was a farmer’s wife, who on the death of her husband, saw a business opportunity and opened a lineside alehouse for the railway workers at their home, Tween House.

Inside the porch of the church you will find several information boards that provide more detail about the church, the priory and Nanny Mayor. Also inside the porch, you will find the information needed to calculate the coordinates to find the cache.

There is a small, grassed parking area at the bottom of the path that leads to the church. We would recommend avoiding 3pm on the first Sunday of each month when the church holds a service.

The given coordinates will take you to the porch at the church where you will need to study the telephone number of Mrs Helen Barrass, Church Warden.
