Come and join us on a scenic tour of the beautiful grounds of Studley Royal. A wonderful location for the whole family. Studley Royal is about 6 miles from Newby Hall and forms part of the Fountains Abbey Estate.
Meet us from 11 am at the given coordinates, which are by the Visitors’ Centre. There is plenty of parking here, free of charge, toilets, a National Trust shop and a café/restaurant
After 11:30, if you wish to join us, we will stroll around Studley Royal, passing by the lake and as it's a deer park we may also spot some deer on our travels! The walk will take about an hour and we will be passing some geocaches along the way. There is another café near here, which has a dog-friendly outdoor area and nearby toilets.
Studley Royal including the ruins of Fountains Abbey, is a designated World Heritage Site in North Yorkshire. The site, which has an area of 800 acres, features an 18th century landscaped garden, some of the largest Cistercian ruins in Europe, a Jacobean mansion and a Victorian church designed by William Burges. It was developed around the ruins of Fountains Abbey. In 1966, the estate was bought by West Riding County Council and in 1983, was taken over by the National Trust.
The dramatic abbey ruins at Fountains Abbey are the largest monastic ruins in the country. Founded in 1132 by Benedictine monks, the abbey operated for 407 years, becoming one of the wealthiest monasteries in England, until its dissolution in 1539 under the order of Henry VIII.
Should you wish to visit the grounds of Fountains Abbey afterwards, this is free to National Trust members. Otherwise the cost is £15 per adult, £7.50 per child or a family ticket for £37.50.
