Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden nearby the beautiful, and very useful to know, fording location across the North Teign River. Manga Rails, Mangersford and Hugh Lake Crossing are all names for the same crossing across the North Teign. It is located in the picturesque North Teign valley, and offers some beautiful scenery of this part of the Moor.

The fording place is thought to have been used for centuries. It was mentioned in writings for a presettlement at a Court of the Manor of Lydford in 1419. It may well have been used before this, but even so it is clear that this fording place across the River Teign has been, and continues to be, an important place in the landscape today. Indeed I used the rails to cross on a recent walk of mine. They are a very fun, if slightly treacherous way of crossing a river, and depending on the direction you approach this one you may well need to use it.
