Geocache Description:

The Memorial

The Memorial takes the form of a Celtic Cross set on a square plinth within metal railings erected beside the road on West Green.

The memorial was carved from local sandstone by George William Brotton of Bilsdale and unveiled on Wednesday 5th October 1921. Bronze plaques on the east and west faces of the plinth record the names of men who died in the Great War of 1914-18. On the south face is a dedication to the Fallen of the Parish during the conflict. Forty-three of their names are listed on the two plaques.

On the north face of the cross itself, another plaque records that the names of the dead of World War II (of whom there are thirteen) were added to the memorial "by the people of Stokesley" in 1947. These names are recorded on a plaque beneath, on the north face of the plinth.

The Cache

The cache is located a short distance away along a footpath.

You will need to bring your own writing implement to prove your find (although you always do) and possibly a pair of tweezers to access the log sheet.

You will need to visit the memorial at the given co-ordinates to find the data you need to calculate the revised co-ordinates for the cache itself.

The cache can be found at:-

N 54o28.ABC, W 001o11.DEF

Where:-

  • A = The first word MINUS the fourth word on the front of the Memorial.
  • B = The number of letters in the fifteenth surname on the left side.
  • C = The number of letters in first surname in the right hand column at the rear.
  • D = The number of surnames beginning with "B" on the left side.
  • E = The number of letters in the fourth surname on the right side.
  • F = On the right hand side the number of letters in the surname of the "1st Air Mechanic".

Checksum (for the numbers you need to calculate) is 27.
