Geocache Description:

The coordinates are for the War Memorial.

See Logging Instructions below

Granite is a light-colored igneous rock. It forms from the slow crystallization of magma below Earth's surface. Granite is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar with minor amounts of mica, amphiboles, and other minerals. This mineral composition usually gives granite a red, pink, grey, or white color with dark mineral grains visible throughout the rock.

The difference between an extrusive and intrusive igneous rock is the way in which they cool. Intrusive igneous rocks crystallize below Earth's surface and the slow cooling that occurs there allows large crystals to form. Extrusive igneous rocks erupt onto the surface where they cool quickly to form small crystals.

Fine crystals less than 1mm in length, medium crystals between 1-5mm in length and coarse crystals over 5mm in length.

Head to the published coordinates where you will find the War Memorial.

Question 1: Study the memorial and using the chart what is the average size of the crystals found in the granite?

Question 2: Having identified the average size of the crystals in the granite do you think the igneous rock is intrusive or extrusive?

Question 3: Find the crest on the memorial and describe how this differs to the rest of the memorial.

Question 4: Above the date 1939 you will see a larger piece of mineral, using the information provided above, what is this mineral and its measurements?

Question 5: Estimate the total height of the memorial.

This is optional but not compulsory but it would be nice if you can upload a photo of yourself or your GPS at GZ.
