Geocache Description:

St Peter, Doddington

ST PETER, DODDINGTON

St Peter, Doddington is a Grade I listed building, achieving the status on 23 August 1967.

St Peter was built in the C13th with alterations made in the late C18th. It is built of coursed rubble and render with ashlar dressings. The west tower two bay nave with north and south aisles and chancel were rebuilt by Thomas and William Lumby, between 1771 and 1775. The north aisle contains the only surviving medieval work in the church. The two windows are flat topped with hood drip moulds, of three ogee headed lights. These are copied directly on south aisle, as are the east and west windows of four lights, with flowing tracery. The original embattled parapet is continued over all the walls, topped with pinnacles. The chancel has a large east window of five lights with extravagant flowing tracery. This may date from 1729 though it is more likely to be C19th. The west doorway has niches either side with ogee tops in a florid Gothic style, circular quatrofoil window above. The bell chamber has simple openings with Y-travery on each face. The interior has 2 bay arcades with octagonal piers and ouble chamfered arches. The font is early English, probably from the C15th.

The church is open when the neighbouring Hall is open, should you wish to have a look inside.
