Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches which are placed at or near village halls and community centres. This is a series which other cachers can add to and expand into other geographical areas. See the bookmark list for all the caches in the series.

Whiddon Down, which has the nearby exit on the A30 named after it, is a small Village falling just within both the administrative area of West Devon and Dartmoor National Park. The area was largely populated by scattered hamlets and farms from the Saxon period. This diffuse community grew very quickly from the 18th century with the turn-piking of the south-north road. The Post Inn is a 15th century crossroad dwelling that was converted to a coaching inn and post point. Population growth of Whiddon Down continued to grow throughout much of the 19th century until it was sufficient for the establishment of a primary school and the Methodist church. Eventually the need for the primary school in Whiddon Down diminished and it was closed down. Thankfully for this series the building was transformed into the village hall and it continues in this role today. That will most likely explain the 'odd' features that are not normally seen in purpose built village halls.

To work out the coordinates for the final you need to go to the village hall and find the following information.

1) The number of bells minus the number of weather veins = A

2) The number of curved block making up the window arch below the bell minus two = B

3) Above the information board facing the road there is a white sign with black writing. The number of letters on the first line minus two = C

4) The number of gate in the wall facing the road = D

5) The number of gates in the wall times the number of windows facing the road = E
