A striking sandstone and granite building by William Smith 1868. The slender spire was added in 1875 and rebuilt in 1995. Interior refurbished 2004, LDN Architects. Stained glass by David Gauld, Douglas Strachan and Jane Bayliss. Oak screen and choir stalls. Binns pipe organ 1902.
The first permanent premises of the Free Church after 1843 was the simple granite box-auditorium of Huntly Street. This church was designed William Smith and opened in 1868 as a second more elaborate premises of United Free Church.
It has a large square clock tower with open stonework and a smaller round turreted tower to the east framing a central strained glass rose window. It dominates the west end of Union Street.
The congregation gained some notoriety and came in for much critisism in 2013 when they broke with the Church of Scotland due to their refusal to move with the times and finally accept the ordination of gay clergy.
