Geocache Description:

This war memorial is a Calvary cross standing in St Oswald's churchyard. The memorial honours the 79 parishioners who gave their lives in the Great War and the 11 in the Second World War.

It was agreed to create the memorial at a Parish meeting in 1919 and it was designed by the Diocesan Architect W. H. Wood. As the quotes for the work were too expensive the design had to be simplified. The memorial cost £300 raised by public subscription and was dedicated on Saturday 19th March 1921 by Bishop Henson of Durham and unveiled by Mrs Roberts of Hollingside Hall; a large donor to the memorial and also lost two sons in the War (there is a window in the Church dedicated to them). A number of the men are buried in the churchyard.
There is also a parish World War II war memorial, designed by Durham architects Cordingley & McIntyre, inset in the interior west wall of the church tower.
