The existing parish church of St John the Evangelist is actually the second church to bear that name and in the same churchyard.
The foundations of the old chapel of St John can be seen just above ground level to the right of the gates of the churchyard. The original chapel was built in 1789 and enlarged in 1835.
By the late 1860’s it was too small for the congregation and plans were made to build the current church.
It took till 1881 for work to commence on the new building, with the foundation stone laid by Lord Blachford, Lord of the Manor, on 8th June. The north aisle was added in 1887, again funded by Lord Blachford.
