1, Canonteign - "The Start" Traditional Geocache

This is a pleasant and quiet forest-based walk (or ride) of 4.3 miles, of which 3 miles is rarely used forest tracks in one of the lesser known Forestry Commission plantations.  1.3 miles is along quiet country lanes.  

Each cache is placed to be found and there are a variety of containers. Because of tree cover for much of the route making GPS signals weak, useful clues are provided.

• The Walk: Start off straight onto a forestry track, you pass by an item of historical interest - the R.O.C. Christow field post (separate cache here). Then you descent gently along well made forestry rides to the pond and leat that provide the water for Canonteign Falls (A nearby tourist location that boasts the highest waterfall in England - entirely man made!). Then we climb gently alongside the leat and old woodlands on one side, with modern forestry on the other. Eventually the track emerges onto a quiet road and circles past the Reservoirs back along lanes to the start. There are two steepish hills, both on tarmac, but the terrain is generally good. Walking boots or mountain bike recommended.
• Livestock: The course does not cross any farmland and there should be no direct exposure.
• Dogs: There are no stiles or gates! A great walk for dogs but please keep them on a lead on the road section.
• Bikes: This trail was set and will be maintained using a hybrid ebike, but in parts the going is more suited to mountain bike than road bike. In fact, there is an active community of mountain bikes using these woods and you may see some unofficial trails.
• Caches: A very varied range including many bespoke containers. Many are large enough to take trackables.
• Logging: Please write an interesting log for each cache, not just TFTC or a cut and paste - I enjoy reading about your visit and it's very boring to get dull logs. Be inventive!
• Wildlife: Deer are known in these woods and there will be many birds and forest dwelling animals.
• Bonus: No bonus cache and no clues to collect.
• Preparation: The route should be very easy to follow as it uses well defined tracks and each cache has directions from the previous. There will often by muddy sections through the woods so Boots (Walking or welly) are better than trainers.
