Geocache Description:

Erected in proud and grateful memory of the gallant sons of Tottington.

Who fought for their country in the Great War 1914-1918.

Their name liveth for evermore.

These died that we may live.

Tottington has an entry in the Domesday Book of 1085. In the great book Tottington is recorded by the name of totintune and the main land holder being Ralph FitzHelwin.
During the Second World War, the village was taken over by the British Army when it was incorporated into the Standford Battle Area. The military ranges were needed to prepare Allied infantry for Operation Overlord.
At the end of the war, the War Office, did not allow the former villagers to return to their homes.
The Tottington War Memorial was moved to the neighbouring village of Thompson on the road that once led to the now lost village. If to look at the finger board road sign at the junction you can see where the sign for Tottington has been broken off.

If you look at the memorial it also has the names of the men who returned from the Great War, something I have never seen on a war memorial before. If anyone knows of any other memorial like this please let me know in your log.

The series is dedicated to those who fought for their country. "We will remember them!” If anyone would like to place a War Memorial Cache of your own then please do so. We would ask if you do so please contact Just-us-Two through their profile page or justustwo1013@gmail.com so they can keep track of the numbers
