Geocache Description:

Welcome to the replacement Derbyshire cache for the Little Quest series. For more information about this country-wide network of caches, please click on the "Little Quest" banner above. The LQ Stats page can be found here and the LQ facebook group can be found here

The cache is large enough for swaps and a couple of TBs. Inside the cover of the logbook are the bonus co-ordinates you will need to note down if you are doing the whole series. However the cache can still be found as a single 'standalone' traditional cache too. The cache is located near to a public footpath close to Riber Castle in Matlock. (NB, the cache is NOT on the footpath side of the hedge). At GZ you will have an amazing view of Matlock and the surrounding countryside of Derbyshire. Cache is tucked behind a large roack, please don't try and move the rock, just carefully reach behind it.

There are several ways of approaching the cache, including fairly steep hikes up footpaths from Matlock or Tansley, or the quicker less arduous option of parking near Riber village and walking a shorter distance. If doing the easier option, please try to park considerately. It is not a through road, it is narrow and access is needed for the few residents of the village, please do not block any driveways. Walk up the lane towards the castle, eventually you will see the old gates of the Riber Castle, take the narrow footpath just to the right of the gates.

Riber Castle is one of Derbyshire’s famous landmarks, Its silhouette standing proudly on the top of the hill overlooking Matlock. The Castle has had a variety of incarnations since it was built in 1862 by Mr John Smedley, including a boy's school, a food store during World War Two and a zoo and nature reserve. More recently there has been efforts to renovate the castle into apartments, but there seems to be no progress with this now, which is a shame as the apartments would have this amazing view!
