Geocache Description – 8. Tock Hill
The Story
After Anne makes the connection between the Tall Stone on the map and the one she spotted from Gloomy Water, Dick suggests that they should look for the other points on his map from the lake. The other points on Dick's map are: Chimney, Tock Hill and Steeple. Tock Hill is described as a “funny little hill with a pointed top”.
The Cache
This cache is placed near to just such a hill, Brent Tor- which can be seen from very many points across western Dartmoor. It is a volcanic outcrop which looks pointed from afar as it has a church built on the top of it, dating back to around the 13th Century.
A return walk from the suggested parking to the cache is about a mile.
Points of Interest
There are a few legends as to why Brent Tor church was built here, one of which tells the tale of the merchant who was caught in a storm at sea who vowed to build a church atop the highest land he could see, if he survived.
There are marvellous views of much of Dartmoor from here on a good day.
